2021 GFFA – Overview of the most important events

During the first virtual GFFA 2021 more than 3.000 registered international guests from politics, business, science and civil society had discussed in 20 panels and deep dives about how international agricultural trade can contribute to a secure, diverse and sustainable nutrition.

Video message from United Nationals Secretary-General, António Guterres

76 ministers of agriculture from around the world and 13 high-ranking representatives of international organisations met during the first virtual Berlin Agriculture Ministers’ Conference and adopted a joint political communiqué on climate-friendly and crisis-proof agriculture.

Federal Minister Klöckner welcomed on 22 January 2021 75 fellow ministers from around the world as well as high-level representatives from thirteen international organizations – to the Agriculture Ministers’ Conference in the framework of the GFFA of the Ministry.

Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres sent a video message emphasising that efforts must be intensified in order to achieve the “Zero Hunger” agenda by 2030. “Our agriculture should allow everyone access to a healthy diet, adequate employment opportunities and at the same time minimise waste.”

Subsequently, a jointly adopted communiqué was virtually handed over by Federal Minister Klöckner to Ms. Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Dr. Kalibata, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Food Systems Summit 2021, and Dr. Eloit, Director General of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The kick-off event marked the official start of the GFFA events.

17 Expert Panels
Representatives from politics, business, science and civil society discussed different perspectives and focuses of the 2021 GFFA’s topic during 17 expert panels.

Following each expert panel, interested participants could engage in an in-depth conversation with the panelists and ask further questions during the 30-minute deep dives.

Two high-level events  organised by the European Commission and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
During these panels the topic of the 2021 GFFA ”How to Feed the World in Times of Pandemics and Climate Change” was thoroughly analysed.
For the third time, the Think Aloud! – GFFA Science Slam took place as at the virtual GFFA.

At this short presentation competition, four Science Slams lasting ten minutes that relate to the main subject “How to Feed the World in Times of Pandemics and Climate Change” were presented.

Philipp Swoboda is the winner of the third Think Aloud! – GFFA Science Slam with his talk on “Rocks for Crops and Climat?”.
