GFFA 2020 – Overview of the most important events

“Food for all! Trade for secure, diverse and sustainable food”

The 2020 GFFA was all about trade: roughly 2,300 guests from Germany and abroad held in-depth discussions about how international agricultural trade can contribute to a secure, diverse and sustainable nutrition.

72 ministers of agriculture from around the world and twelve high-ranking representatives of international organisations met in the Weltsaal of the Federal Foreign Office and adopted a joint political communiqué on how international agricultural trade can contribute to a secure, diverse and sustainable nutrition.
The kick-off event marked the official start of the GFFA events that took place from 16 to 18 January 2020. Under the title “Food for all! Trade for Secure, Diverse and Sustainable Nutrition.”, an introduction to this year’s subject was given and its manifold facets were highlighted.

16 expert panels
Representatives from politics, business, science and civil society discussed different perspectives and focuses of trade in the agricultural sector.
FAO Side Event Digital Council

In this side event, the Concept Note for establishing an International Digital Council for Food and Agriculture was presented, discussed and validated. It has been developed by the FAO and the stakeholders mentioned above and is based on the GFFA 2019 Final Communiqué.

Two high-level events were held with international experts, e.g. the European Commission, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The GFFA Innovation Market is an exhibition format presenting practical examples and new solutions related to the main GFFA topic. This year, the exhibition focussed on how international trade can contribute globally to food security and sustainable development. About 30 start-ups, companies, associations and public authorities presented their innovations and activities.

The innovation market provided a great opportunity to make new contacts, to network and to learn about innovative approaches in the agri-food sector.

For the second time, the Think Aloud! – GFFA Science Slam took place at the GFFA during the International Green Week (IGW).

Five slam-presentations addressed the topic “International agriculture trade and the role of the consumers”.

The audience in the BMEL-Hall 23a was the jury and decided who was to receive a prize as the best slammer. Not only the scientific content, but also the intelligibility and entertainment quality were part of the rating.
